The curved A1 body armor is a rugged, steel alloy blend plate that provides level 3 plus body armor protection which is capable of defeating 5.56x45 M855A1 (AP) rounds at velocities of up to 3,100 FPS, 7.62x51 M61 (AP) rounds at velocities up to 2,800 FPS, and all lesser threats with multi-hit capability. This A1 armor plate from Armored Republic features a durable FragLock™ coating, which gives both fragmentation protection and seals the armor to ensure its 20-year shelf life.

The A1 - Alloy Body Armor is able to stop level III+ threats such as 7.62x39/7.62x51/5.56 M193s, 5.56 M855 penetrators, and .223/.308 WIN rounds. And unlike ceramic or polyethylene material, this custom steel alloy blend is able to take several hits from these rounds without fail. This multi-hit special threat resistance is the distinguishing quality of the A1 plate.

The armor plate is curved, shooters cut, and features either our FragLock™ Base Coat or Build-Up Coat.

The FragLock™ coating provides a maintenance-free shelf life of twenty years, which makes this steel plate last much longer than polyethylene or ceramic alternatives. Our Build-Up Coat prevents fragmentation injury, while our Base Coat seals the armor plates up from sweat.

The curved A1 and A2 Hard Armor Side Plates from Armored Republic are there for you when you’re exposed on multiple sides and need higher coverage: Made for any standard cummerbund side plate pockets, this steel armor provides rifle-rated multi-hit protection while being thinner than ceramic and polyethylene. This makes for a reliable low-profile option for rifle protection on all sides.

Note: these side plates are 6 inches horizontally and 8 inches vertically

Side plates are a useful addition to your setup whenever you’re expecting to be exposed on more than your front or back, such as in entry or defensive standpoints. Non-squared-off shooting positions, such as in hallways or in vehicles, also make side plates a highly valuable asset.

Armored Republic's A1 and A2 Hard Side Plates, which are 6 inches horizontally and 8 inches vertically are compatible with most plate carriers that include cummerbund mounted side plate pouches. It comes standard with a curved profile and a base coat of FragLock® configuration- this base coat protects the plate from the elements, gives it a 20-year shelf-life, and deflects fragmentation away from the wearer. An upgrade is available to give the steel plate a Build-Up FragLock® Coat, which captures the fragmentation completely instead of deflecting it away.

The A1 and A2 side armor plates are rated for 5.56mm M193 ammo at 3,100 FPS.

When used with our Adaptive Plate Insert in conjunction with a soft armor panel, our 6"x8" plates can be also used as a rifle-rated trauma/speed plate, offering enhanced protection for your heart.

• Where do side plates go on body armor?  Side plates are placed into the cummerbund. They can be placed inside of integral pouches or mounted by add-on side plate pouches. Always make sure to check your carrier's cummerbund to consult if you have side plate pouches.
• What size is side plate armor?  Side plate armor is usually 6" x 6" or 6" x 8". Keep in mind that 6” x 8” armor is 8 inches vertically. Unless you are tall, some carriers can position these side plates higher into your armpit leading to discomfort. We do not recommend 6” x 8” side plates unless you are 6 feet tall or higher. 
• Are body armor side plates necessary? Simply put, it depends on your task. Modern doctrine will have you present yourself to your target head on which maximizes your body armor footprint presented to the bad guy. Vehicle operations and room clearing however can leave your sides exposed and for these tasks, side armor is recommended.
• What do side plates protect? Side plates protect the same vital organs your front and back plates protect, they simply protect them from side attacks.

For maximum protection against a high-grade military threat, our C2 - Ceramic Body Armor is the best option the market can provide: This Armored Republic level 4 body armor rated plate provides single-hit protection and is tested to the NIJ’s proposed 0101.07 standard as an RF3 plate, which is the highest protection listed. This protection rating means the plate can stop a .30 caliber Armor Piercing bullet, with a mass of 10.8g, at speeds of up to 2,880 ft/s. The U.S. Military designation for this is an M2 AP.

In addition to the higher level IV protection level, this ceramic C2 armor plate has several other advantages: Its shape and backface deformation resistance, patented ergonomic cut, and proprietary FragLock™ coating. 

Ceramic fractures into itself when hit, mitigating projectile fragmentation at the risk of creating spalling. It also allows for less backface deformation and thus helps prevent the injuries caused by the bullet’s blunt impact. It is also a bit lighter than some steel options.

Finally, the C2 ceramic body armor is also sprayed with a FragLock™ coating unique to Armored Republic plates. Armor is often liable to both eroding from the elements and fragmentation when hit by a bullet. • Is ceramic better than steel armor?  There are pros and cons to both armor types. Which armor is better depends on which is the right armor for your needs. Steel is a smart choice for those who are preparing for threats we actively face in the United States, who want to keep costs to a minimum (steel is cheaper than ceramic), and who want armor that is very durable and requires little to no maintenance. Ceramic is a good choice for those who are anticipating an environment where explosives or large-caliber armor-piercing rounds could occur and cost or low shelf-life is not an issue.
• Is ceramic body armor fragile?  Ceramics most well-known weakness is its brittle composition which is due to how it is manufactured. Ceramic is susceptible to hairline cracks (even ones you cannot see unless you x-ray your plate) from it being tossed into a trunk or being dropped on the ground.
• Is ceramic armor better than Kevlar? Ceramic armor is better than Kevlar if you are looking for the best rifle-rated protection from a single threat. This means ceramic armor is going to perform better than Kevlar to stop up to a single armor-piercing M2 30-06 round. If your threat assessment deems handguns to be your biggest threat, and you need to conceal armor under clothing, Kevlar is a far more practical option. Lastly, keep in mind that Kevlar is used in conjunction with all ceramic plates to prevent spalling.

For those working near water, this armor plate’s neutral buoyancy is also an important asset.

While this body armor's primary usage is for a plate carrier, it can also be inserted into a laptop pocket in one of our Phoenix or Firebird armored backpacks for added lightweight, rifle-rated protection.

The P2 - Polyethylene Body Armor is made of polyethylene material and provides high-grade protection that won’t fatigue you when you’re active and won’t endanger you when you’re near water. Tested independently to NIJ Level 3 standards, the P2 plate provides level 3 protection which is capable of stopping the 7.62x51 M80 Ball at 2780 FPS. It has also been tested to stop some special threats; it will defeat 5.56x45 M193 at 3150 FPS and 7.62x39 AK-47 at 2380 FPS. Due to the way this armor functions, it is incapable of stopping MSC/EP rounds such as M855.

Polyethylene stops threats by “capturing” the bullet in its material- the heat of the spinning bullet softens the polyethylene enough to melt it partially, allowing the bullet into the material, where it then is stopped by the remaining unmelted fibers within the plate. As the bullet slows down, the polyethylene then rehardens. Because of its unique way of stopping bullets, polyethylene is able to take multiple hits without shattering like ceramic plate alternatives.

The primary benefit of the P2 polyethylene armor plate, however, is its weight: Only PE hard armor can provide rifle-rated protection at under four pounds. The greater activity this allows makes polyethylene a popular choice for some military personnel.

As with our other hard armor options, the P2 armor plate is also sprayed with our FragLock™ solution to seal it from the elements.

• How is polyethylene body armor made? Body armor polyethylene is made by unidirectionally bonding UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) fibers over HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) sheets making it easy to mold and cut to a specific shape.
• Is polyethylene the same as Kevlar? No, although both are a type of ballistic-rated polymer, they both have different properties. Kevlar acts like a net to catch and stop a bullet keeping it flexible, while Polyethylene acts more like an airbag. Kevlar is not able to stop rifle rounds where polyethylene is. 
• Is polyethylene stronger than Kevlar? Usually, yes it is. The determining factor is always going to be the threat level. Most PE plates such as our P2 plate are rifle-rated to level III, while most Kevlar panels are IIIA. In a direct comparison of IIIA PE vs IIIA Kevlar, they will perform similarly, however, keep in mind Kevlar is flexible and able to conform to all body types while PE will be a hard plate.

The innovative A3 body armor from Armored Republic is a tough, lightweight plate that combines polyethylene and alloy to produce a formidable level 3 plus-rated armor offering. This armor plate combines the best of both armor types; absorbing fragmentation while being able to stop mild steel core rounds such as 5.56x45MM, M193 Ball and M855- as well as 7.62x51MM NATO Ball.

The A3 plate comes in at 4.6 lbs, 0.7” thick, and is pending NIJ approval for 0101.06 certification (all tests passed). This plate is lighter than monolithic steel plates and the lightest plate in our Alloy Series. While this body armor's primary usage is for a plate carrier, it can also be inserted into a laptop pocket in one of our Phoenix or Firebird armored backpacks for added lightweight, rifle-rated protection.

The A3 armor plate's steel strike face provides a higher level of protection than a PE plate alone. • What will level 3 body armor stop? The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) rates level 3 body armor protection at 6x shots of 7.62x51mm @ 2,780 FPS from 51' away. Our AR500 Armor® Heritage plate and our UHMWPE (Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene) P2 plate are both rated to stop this threat.
• What is a level 3+ plate and what is it rated? Level 3+ indicates a protection rating that meets and exceeds the NIJ level III rating. Unfortunately, since level III+ is not a regulated threat level, this only means the plate can hold up to level III AND specific additional threats specified by the manufacturer NOT covered under the NIJ 0101.06 listing. Level 3 plus performance is going to vary from model and manufacturer. Most manufacturers use 3+ to denote the coverage of all 5.56 threats. For example, our A1, A2, and A3 plates are all III+ but have slightly different velocities at which they can handle 7.62x39, 5.56x45, and 7.62x51. The variable factors at which a III+ plate can perform are usually going to be defined by the materials used and the plate weight.
• Why is polyethylene (PE) used in body armor? Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene or UHMWPE or PE for short is a lightweight super strong polymer that began its journey in life as lightweight sails for yachting competitions. The material (at the time referred to as Dyneema) was used because of how lightweight and rip-resistant it was. When UHMWPE is cut and pressed into varying thicknesses, it is capable of deforming and encapsulating ballistic projectiles. The pro of this armor is it is the lightest-weight rifle-rated protection on the market at only 3.3 lbs. The cons of this armor, if polyethylene is the only material used, are due to the unique nature of this armor's stopping capabilities, steel core ammunition such as the 5.56 M855 “Green tip” can potentially punch through, along with its steeper cost to manufacture.

• What is the lightest weight steel plate? Our Armored Republic A3 hybrid steel plate weighs only 4.6 lbs while our heavier Build-Up coated A1 Plate weighs in at 9.5 lbs. Lastly, our robust and mobile Build-Up coated A2 Plate weighs almost in between at only 6.5 lbs.
• How thick does steel need to be bullet-resistant? Thickness is relevant to materials used. Some materials like UHMWPE require much more to stop and encapsulate a projectile while steel and ceramic only have to be thick enough to provide a hardened surface that can withstand a ballistic threat. Since there are different types of steel that can be used for steel armor, most AR500-550 steel plates only need to be roughly 0.25” thick. When fragmentation coating is applied the thickness increases to roughly 0.5” thick.
• What is spall and fragmentation? We often see people use these two terms interchangeably, but they are not the same. Fragmentation is when a high-velocity projectile (such as a bullet) hits a surface hard enough to cause it to break into fragments. Fragments that are not fully decelerated continue to travel outward from the point of impact. When you are using steel core armor, you can expect to see fragmentation only if the armor stops a threat. Spalling is when armor breaks and leaves pieces that become a backward threat to the wearer. Generally speaking, ceramic-type armor spalls. Because ceramic armor is generally more brittle than other forms of armor, it is especially susceptible to spalling and fragmentation.
